DIOCESAN / PARISH CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATES

(As of:  March 20, 2020)

Please take a few moments (less than 8 minutes actually) to listen to this video from our diocesan Shepherd:

Bishop Sheridan’s message regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkWmF9G504U&feature=youtu.be

(As of:  March 19, 2020)
For those who are wondering about any recent updates or whether or not there will be Holy Week and/or Easter liturgies:  Bishop Sheridan and his Senior Staff had a meeting yesterday on a number of important subjects affecting diocese-wide operations.  Bishop Sheridan has advised that he will disseminate updated information and instructions to diocesan priests and parishes tomorrow (Friday, March 20, 2020), addressing such issues as:

-  Remaining Lent liturgies;
-  Are Lent Reconciliation Services still cancelled;
-  Will there be 2020 Holy Week and Easter liturgies. etc.

The parish’s Facebook and websites will continue to be updated when there are meaningful and significant updates affecting the parish’s liturgies, activities, events, etc.

(As an aside note: The Vatican earlier this week announced that Pope Francis will be celebrating Holy Week and Easter liturgies without the presence of the assembled faithful -- as of this moment in time, at least. The decision, which was made as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, marks an unprecedented move in modern times – yet does appear to leave open the possibility of a public celebration of the Easter Sunday Mass, depending on the favorable progress of the worldwide health crisis by then (e.g., April 12).

This means that the Palm Sunday Mass; the Chrism Mass; the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday - which Pope Francis has always held in detention centers or with asylum seekers; Good Friday’s commemoration of the Lord’s Passion; and the Easter Vigil on Saturday, will all be celebrated by Pope Francis without the faithful being physically present--while there are plans for live-streaming.

Of note, worldwide the Holy Father, bishops and priests continue to remind the faithful that they are invited to their local parish churches to pray and take part in Eucharistic Adoration, always maintaining a safe distance (6-9 feet) and following the recommended sanitary precautions, such as washing one’s hands and disinfecting surfaces with watered down alcohol.

A Public Announcement from the Diocese of Colorado Springs  [this afternoon, March 13, 2020]

[we have now joined an ever growing list of U.S. dioceses]

COLORADO SPRINGS. Most Rev. Michael J. Sheridan of the Diocese of Colorado Springs announced that all public Masses in the diocese are canceled effective immediately through March 31 in order to prevent the further spread of coronavirus.

“In response to Governor Jared Polis’ directive that gatherings of more than 250 people should be avoided, I am joining with Archbishop Aquila of the Archdiocese of Denver and Bishop Berg of the Diocese of Pueblo in deciding that the public celebration of Mass will cease immediately, continuing until March 31,” Bishop Sheridan said.

“While I regret this drastic action, I believe it is necessary to protect the health and safety of all in our diocese. All Catholic parishioners are dispensed from their obligation to attend Mass during this period and should confirm confession times with their local parishes. In addition, anyone who has questions about scheduling a wedding or funeral should contact their parish office.”
